Flashcards

Option 1 - Use a prepared list

Please select one of the predefined lists below

Fry Sight Words:The Fry sight words are a list of 1,000 high-frequency words that make up about 90% of the words used in written English. They were compiled by Dr. Edward B. Fry in the 1950s and are arranged in order of frequency. The sight words are commonly used in elementary school reading programs to improve reading fluency, as students who memorize them can become more proficient readers and better able to comprehend the texts they are reading.

Dolch Sight Words:Dolch Sight Words refer to a list of the most frequently used words in the English language that were compiled by educator Edward William Dolch in the 1930s and 1940s. The list includes 220 high-frequency words and 95 common nouns that are difficult to decode phonetically or are commonly used in writing. The words are divided into five levels of difficulty, ranging from pre-primer to third grade level.

Why use Flashcards?

Flashcards are a helpful tool for teaching children to read. I use them to practice word decoding, the ability to recognize and sound out words, with my son.

Word decoding involves breaking down words into their individual sounds, or phonemes, and then blending those sounds together to form a recognizable word. Some of the words included in the lists are difficult to decode phonetically because they do not follow regular phonetics rules. These words are often referred to as "irregular" or "sight" words.
